Hummingbird | Google’s New Search Algorithm Knows Just What We’re Looking For

On September 27, Google celebrated its 15th birthday along with the debut of Hummingbird, its newest search algorithm. Hummingbird is designed to return better results with precision and speed, but what else is new?

With everyone in a tizzy over SEO, Hummingbird created quite a buzz in the tech world. Optimizers were worried all their hard work had been for nothing- and just when they were getting the hang of it! As it turns out, Google went easy on us this time. The algorithm considers a webpage eligible for first page rankings based on the same criteria as before, so continue to stick with original, high-quality content.

What has changed is the way the algorithm processes your search query. After looking at new search activity trends, Google found “conversational search” to be much more common than single-word searches.  This type of search refers to entering a full question rather than just a few key words. This is especially true of people who are speaking searches. For example, you might say, “Where is the closest 24-hour pharmacy to my home?” instead of, “pharmacy” and “location” and “nearby” and “24-hour”.

Taking this into consideration, Google tweaked its algorithm to be more understanding. Hummingbird can recognize the meaning behind your question and the reason you are asking, rather than pick words from your question and search for them out of context. So far, Google has reported nothing but improvements.

Hummingbird is looking to bring the best results for your search query, zooming from page to page only stopping to hover above websites that are in full bloom.
